Playing in Translation: Intimate storytelling that will provoke and entertain.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: WINNIPEG, August 23rd 2012
Theatre Projects Manitoba (TPM) is thrilled to announce the Prairie premieres of two incredible plays from Quebec and to launch our Theatre Salon, where Manitoba artists and audiences can explore Quebec theatre in both official languages! Our 23rd season features the work of Carole Fréchette and Evelyne de la Chenelière; two acclaimed Canadian playwrights whose work has been translated and performed around the world!
“The experience of presenting Quebec theatre in translation brings TPM a new vista; a fresh theatrical landscape for our community to explore. With TPM’s Theatre Salon, we are proposing an intimate forum for the exchange of ideas, a base camp from which students, artists and audiences will help us explore this defining facet of our Canadian culture and community.”- Artistic Director Ardith Boxall
On the stage, the season opens with John and Beatrice, an imaginative and subversive comedy written by Governor General and Siminovitch award winning playwright, Carole Fréchette and Translated by John Murrell. Directed by TPM Artistic Director Ardith Boxall the production features Kevin Klassen and Tracy Penner as the eponymous duo.
TPM’s second production, Bashir Lazhar is a poignant and poetic story of the immigrant experience written by Evelyne de la Chenelière and translated by Morwyn Brebner. This exquisite solo performance will be directed by Ann Hodges. In 2011, Bashir Lazhar was adapted as a film entitled Monsieur Lazhar which won a Genie for Best Canadian Motion Picture and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
TPM’s Theatre Salon will be a monthly theatre mash up featuring performances inspired by theatre in translation and exploring Fréchette and de la Chenelière’s respective oeuvres. Our colleagues at Le Théâtre Vice Versa Theatre (TVVT) will present readings of John and Beatrice and Bashir Lazhar in French and we invite you to encounter the plays in their original language. The monthly salons will feature music and performances from la belle province brought to you by an eclectic mix of emerging and established Manitoba artists.
